Monkey Punch, il cui vero nome è Kazuhiko è nato ad Hamanakachō il 26 maggio 1937.Prima di intraprendere la professione di disegnatore era impiegato come ingegnere ai raggi X presso l'ospedale Kushiro Red Cross Hospital. Per caso poi il direttore dell'ospedale, Shunichi Michishita, notò il suo talento come disegnatore di fumetti e lo incoraggiò così a proseguire su quella strada.
Fu così che nel 1965 Katou Kazuhiko pubblicò la sua prima storia, Playboy Nyumon (Come diventare un playboy) sulla rivista Manga Story. Due anni più tardi, utilizzando lo pseudonimo di "Monkey Punch", iniziò due serie manga sulla rivista Manga Action Weekly. La prima serie si intitolava Pinky Punky e parlava di una conturbante investigatrice privata alle prese con il suo arcinemico, uno scienziato pazzo pervertito. Il successo fu discreto. La seconda serie invece è diventata una dei classici della cultura manga, non solo in Giappone, ma in tutto il mondo: si trattava di Lupin III. Monkey Punch pensava di esaurire la saga di Lupin III con una sola serie ma grazie al successo riscosso dal ladro gentiluomo creò oltre serie.
Attualmente risiede a Tokyo, dove conduce una vita tranquilla, grazie soprattutto ai profitti che gli continuano ad arrivare dallo sfruttamento dei diritti su Lupin III. Saltuariamente si reca in italia dove intrattiene rapporti con i Kappa boys responsabili delle riedizioni di Lupin III sotto la sua direzione.
Dal 22 al 25 novembre2001 è stato ospite a Romics (Fiera del fumetto tenutasi a Roma) dove ha incontrato molti fans e ricevuto il Romics D'Oro. Il calore della gente che l'ha accolto gli ha fatto comprendere il successo che lui e naturalmente Lupin III continuano a riscuotere anche in Italia.

Monkey Punch, who’s real name is Kazuhiko Katō, was born on may 26th1937 in Hamanaachō. Before starting is drawer career he was employed as X ray engineer in the KushiroRedCrossHospital. Casually the hospital director noticed his ability and encouraged him to became a manga drawer.
So in 1965 Kazuhiko Katōpublished his first story: Playboy Nyumon (how to became a playboy) on the magazine Manga Story. Two years later using the pseudonym of Monkey Punch, he published two manga series on the magazine Manga Action Weekly. The first serie was entitled Pinky Punky, and was about a charming female private eye who had to defeat her greatest enemy a perverted mad scientist (this title had a quite good success). The second one become one of the “cult” of manga culture, not only in Japan, but also in the entire world: it was “Lupin the III”. Monkey Punch thought to stop drawing it after the first series, but the success he obtained made him create other series of this manga.
He now lives in Tokyo, where he has a quiet life thanks to copyrights of Lupin the III. Sometimes he travels to Italy where is in touch with Kappa Boys who are re-publishing Lupin the III under his directon.
In November 22-25th 2001 he was invited as special guest to Romics.
